Dance the Day Away

A Dream Come True

Before we throw ourselves in to 2018 I wanted to take a good look at the year that has just finished.

So much happened last year that it really does seem like a bit of a dream come true for us. I think it is really important to acknowledge where we started, where we are now, who joined us along the way and then look at the future.

The first half of the year was spent still consolidating the business side of things. We had done more studies and training and when June arrived my career path took a huge change. For those of you who didn’t know me before GT Studios, I was a Midwife and Registered Nurse. This role ended in June and we decided that it was time to take GT Studios that extra step and make it the Boutique Studio we had always wanted it to be. This meant I would need to dedicate all my time to the business but in turn it meant we could now truly look after you the way we had always wanted to! I really want to tell you all about the exciting transformation that has happened so this will be a feature in the next edition of our newsletter this year.

Dance the Day Away - Ballet in the park

Model Ava

Dance was a strong point for us in 2017. We photographed two performances for Julie-anne from Starlets SA and were commissioned for an advertising campaign with Jo from Move Through Life Dance Studio. We really love dance photography so we decided to offer a “Dance the Day Away” photo experience during the school holidays. We have continued to offer our other photo experiences and have added lots of beautiful clothes and props to the GT Studios wardrobe throughout the year.

Ballet in the Park

Graham had six International Magazine publications between September and January. We are very excited about this and delighted to be able to help the young models who are featured further their exposure and modelling careers. More on this later in the year.

Model Erin at the Australian Supermodel of the Year Auditions

October was a huge month for us. It started with the Australian Supermodel of the Year Adelaide Auditions. We loved meeting such a great group of young people with ambition and amazing futures ahead. We had the pleasure of travelling interstate for photo shoots and meeting interstate photographers and models while we were there. It is really great to meet others in the same field and be able to work as collaborators and support each other rather than as competition. Photography can be a lonely path if you let it but we have been so fortunate with the people we have networked with since we set up GT Studios.

Models Ellirah, Alyssa, Teegan,Brittany and Erin

Once again we took part in Susy’s Girls Night In Charity Event in October. With both our 2016 and 2017 winners now having had their photo sessions.

As always, ongoing training and education plays a big part in the business. We always make a point of catching up with familiar faces at the Big Lens Day at Diamonds Camera Video and Digital. We popped along to the print colour calibration session at CCP hosted by Diamonds and continued our on line training. Of course – it can’t be all work and no play – so what do photographers do to relax – a workshop with Denis Smith and his Ball of Light – always lots of fun even if it is freezing. We didn’t have to go in the water – Denis did – he had a wet suit on so hopefully he wasn’t as cold as we were!!

Dancing with Light

As 2017 drew to an end we realised that our GT Studios family had grown considerably. Many of the previous year’s clients had returned and we had met so many new people along the way. We are truly grateful for the amazing year that we had. We love getting to know you all and we hope that you enjoyed your experience with us. Every photo experience is unique and we love designing it especially for you!

Model Teegan @mylittlestredhead

Thank you to all of you who made 2017 so amazing and we hope that you will continue to journey with us in 2018 – you can keep up to date with us through our newsletter – you can become part of the GT Studios Family by filling in your email address and pressing the subscribe button on the left hand side of the blog page or if you have received this as an email you can simply press reply and send to be added to our Family list. As a January treat we will give the first 5 new members an extra half hour free when you book your photo experience! Good Luck!

Pure Essence – A Fine Art Photo Exhibition

Happy New Year everyone! A great start to 2018 for GT Studios – we have been invited by Jin from By Blackbird on King William Road at Goodwood to exhibit some of our work. We are so excited to be given this opportunity.

We observed this short eared owl for about an hour whilst it caught rodents and fed its chicks. Olympic Peninsula, Washington State, USA

The hardest part for us was deciding on a theme – when we are not photographing children we have quite an eclectic collection – we both have a very different way of looking at the same thing and this is actually a really good thing! At first we thought we would present “The Owl and the Pussycat” – Graham took some awesome images of an owl when we were in America and we both have a huge collection of cats both large and small from all over the world. On reflection we decided that this was perhaps not appealing enough to a wider audience.

We then gave our light painting and abstract work some consideration – however, this too is fairly restrictive in its appeal!

We eventually decided that we both took images of flowers and flowers featured in a lot of photo experiences with our clients too. Perhaps we should exhibit our flowers…..

For flowers and girls – it’s the little details that matter

Most of our photography these days revolves around children – but we still find ourselves photographing flowers. Sometimes it is in conjunction with a photo experience; sometimes it is when we are enjoying some down-time in some of the beautiful gardens we visit both locally and when on holiday.

Sweet Sunshine

Sweet Sunshine

When we put this collection together for the exhibition we realised that Pure Essence was fitting for both our Flower Collection on display and for sale as well as our Photo Experiences that we offer.

Blue Agapanthus, Adelaide Botanic Gardens, South Australia

In philosophy, essence is the property or set of properties that make an entity or substance what it fundamentally is, and which it has by necessity, and without which it loses its identity – this is what we try to capture when you look into our lens.

Every child is a different kind of flower and all together make this world a beautiful garden.

We photograph flowers so their essence doesn’t fade – we create photographic art capturing the essence of children so the memories last forever.

We would love to see you at the official opening of the exhibition on Saturday 6th of January 2pm -5pm

See all the details in the invitation above.

Making Christmas Gift Giving Easy For You!

It’s that time of year when we start to make our Christmas lists. Even Santa is making a list and checking it twice! Today’s blog is about helping you with your list making and making Christmas Gift Giving easy for you!

Have you been naughty or nice?

Christmas Photo Experience

Christmas Photo Experience

Gifts, greetings cards, ingredients for baking – I can think of many lists that I could be writing! Are you a list maker? Are you the person who has to decide who has been naughty and who has been nice?

Making a list…..

Gifts, greetings cards, ingredients for baking - I can think of many lists that I could be writing!

Gifts, greetings cards, ingredients for baking – I can think of many lists that I could be writing!

I am not very good at those sorts of lists – I think everyone should have a lovely Christmas. I try to please everyone and usually end up feeling exhausted by the end of it and not really happy with what I have done. So, this year I am going to try really hard to be super organised – not take on too much responsibility and enjoy every moment with Family and Friends.

Surprise!

It's just what I wanted! Children and adults alike will love a framed portrait for Christmas

However, I want to help you with your Christmas gift list first. If you have had a photo experience with us this year you might like to think about using some of your images as Christmas gifts for those special people in your life. It will make your Christmas shopping a lot easier than normal! If you haven’t had a photo experience keep reading – we can still help you too!

Dance the Day Away

Dance with your heart – your body will follow.

So you are probably wondering what dance has to do with photography – I guess for me the two go together naturally. If it wasn’t for dance I would not have met Graham.

Ballet on the Beach

Ballet on the Beach

Dance has been a part of my life since I was 4, about the same age as this little dancer in the image above, and I met Graham at a dancing school when I was eleven.  As two photographers with a passion for dance it was only a matter of time before GT Studios offered  the opportunity to create photo experiences for dancers.

Ballet by the Lake

“If you dance with your heart, your body will follow.”

Mia Michaels

We dance because it is what we love to do.

After a reasonable break from dance I have recently returned. I love every minute of my contemporary class at Move Through Life Dance Studio and I hope that my renewed involvement will help when we are creating dance experiences. When I was little I always found it helpful if the teacher demonstrated the position for me. Likewise – I think it is nice if we can show our dancers the position we are asking for. I’m not suggesting I can do it as well as some of the dancers but at least I can ask for positions by name and know that we are getting it right!

Ballet in the Park

When I was looking for dance quotes today I found this one form Bill Austin – it reminded me of when Graham and I would be learning dance routines and also where I am at the moment – “When you take dancing lessons, you learn steps and you learn steps and you learn steps. It can go on for a long time. And then one day, you just learn to dance, and it is so different. “

Ballet in the Snow!!

Ballet in the Snow!! Christmas Winter Wonderland

I love all our themed photo experiences but I have a secret passion for a Ballet or Dance Photo Experience and love when we are given the opportunity to help create a dream experience for a little dancer. Dance fits so beautifully with the basic beliefs that we build our business upon. We believe GT Studios is about people and the human connection. Dance also can be seen as this – we want to capture this form of expression  – the hopes and dreams of each dancer and turn them into art that can be displayed on the walls of their home – reminding them what they are working towards.

Ballet in the Park

It is also important for us to give back to the dance community.  We recently enjoyed the Starlets SA Showtime concert and have given the Starlets families the opportunity to download their images from our website.

Ballet on the Beach – Mum and her little Ballerinas

If you think your little dancer would like a Dance/Ballet Photo Experience give me a call on 0481 190 163  (or contact us here and I will call you). We can arrange a no obligation consultation to discuss some options.  The photo experience is a beautiful gift for your dancer and the framed images make gorgeous gifts too!

Tutu on Black – taken in the studio

On a closing note I thought I should add that “Happiness is……finding the perfect dance partner…..and a photographer that understands dance! I found my perfect dance partner – hopefully we can be your perfect photographer – hear from you soon – Karen

Dance the Day Away

Black & White or Colour

Do you have a preference for Black & White or Colour photography?

This is a question we ask when we are helping our clients custom design their photo experience. The answer will help decide the colour of clothes, the setting and even the style of photography.

It also depends on where the artwork is destined to hang – what the decor of the room is, what size it will be and whether it will be presented in a frame or as an acrylic or other presentation. However, sometimes it just comes down to personal taste and it is often nice to see the same image in both black & white and colour.

The image featured on the blog today was published in the “Gallery of Refined Art” Children’s Photography Wing this week. We chose to submit it in black and white.

The Vintage Beach Experience

We don’t often do Beach Experiences but when everything comes together and you get gorgeous little girls in beautiful vintage styled dresses in a magnificent location you can guarantee some amazing wall art will be produced. This was the case on this day. We have now released the first three in this series.

Sea Spray and Lace

The gorgeous girls were sisters, the dresses were from Dollcake, a Melbourne, Australian based company and the scenery is one of our picturesque South Australian Beaches  on the Fleurieu Peninsula.

Vintage Holiday - Girls on the Beach

Vintage Holiday – Girls on the Beach

All of our photo experiences start with a pre-session consultation. This is when we are able to come together as a team and discuss themes, colour, style, location and let your heart do the talking. As artists we understand the need to be creative.

We offer both indoor studio experiences and outdoor natural light experiences and we discuss all the options when we are helping our clients create their perfect photo experience.

Off the wall Ukuleles - award winning image

Off The Wall Ukuleles

January is traditionally a time to look forward and make plans for the rest of the year – don’t get me wrong – we at GT Studios have been doing a lot of that this month – but we thought it was also a great time to look back at the year that was and take note of what we have achieved in the last 12 months. We were so busy that we sometimes forgot to mention some of the achievements we gained along the way!

Pano Awards Bronze for Off The Wall Ukuleles

Graham entered three panoramas into the Epson International pano awards last year. The image above received a bronze award and the other 2 images were 1 point and 2 points off of receiving a bronze award. Not a bad effort for his first attempt at this competition!

The Ukulele shop featured in the first panorama can be found on the beautiful island of Kauai, Hawaii in Kapaa town.

Dark clouds over the curvy black tar and the black volcanic rock near Iceland’s Kleifarvatn lake

Iceland and Hawaii are two of our favourite outdoor landscape photography locations. The natural light in both theses wonders of nature are amazing and reinforce why we love doing what we do!

Panorama of the Honolulu skyline at night.

If you click on any of the images it will make them bigger!

Ditto!

It was all go when we met these two little cuties for their photo experience in the park.

Yes, three year old boys have an abundance of energy and when they are twins they have each other to bounce off!

It was fun and games and the time went so quickly despite it being another cold and wet day.

Time does go quickly and that’s why we at GT Studios like to help you capture life’s moments. Once they have gone you can’t replay them – regular photo experiences are a great way of creating memories which are there for you to enjoy now and will be there for future generations too – let us help you create some unique works of art that you will love to display on your wall. Contact us today for a consultation.
