Some of our GT Studios teen ambassadors - an important part of our caring community of like minded girls, supporting each other as they journey into the modelling industry.

August Snapshot – GT Studios Photography

A snapshot with a difference today

I did a google search today for Adelaide Photography Studio teen and tween (as you do!) – to my delight we were ranked second on the first page – I believe this is due to our hard work and dedication to our clients and the fabulous effort that our gorgeous Ambassadors and their parents  do in return. We have built a caring community in an often harsh environment. We have come a long way in the last few years since we chose to make this our life!

I have decided you need to know what really makes us tick so here are a few words from my heart – to yours – about why we do what we do…..

Do what you Love – Love what you Do

Whether it's in the studio, or on location, we take the same care to make sure that every detail is prepared. This teen photo experience had flowers arranged by GT Studio's own flower arranger.

Do you ever wonder why you get up in the morning?

I’m sure we have all had days where we wondered what it would be like if we followed our dream instead of doing what we thought we were expected to do.

Graham and I have always loved photography – over the years it has gone from being a hobby to a major interest to a passion and now a living.

It was at the point that it became a passion that we knew we had some major decisions to make in our life.

An obvious connection between our subject and photographer at this teen photo experience at GT Studios.

An obvious connection between our subject and photographer at this teen photo experience at GT Studios.

We had been taking photographs for family and friends but circumstances were changing and we were starting to charge for our time. This was a huge step for us – filled with self-doubt we took that leap of faith and set up our business, GT Studios Photography was born. Well, we were not bowled over by customers rushing in however we worked hard to make a name for ourselves.

Dance is a favourite subject for GT Studios, and this little tween enjoyed her dance in the park.

We didn’t want to be like every other photographer in the area – we wanted to offer something different. We started by providing a service for anybody who needed a photographer – any style, any genre – we would do it. We soon realised this was no more fulfilling than working in a job that you don’t have passion for. We needed to find the area that we loved to photograph.

To celebrate a milestone in a teen or tween's life, it's a privilege for GT Studios to be a part of this unique experience - such as this ballet dancer's graduation to pointe shoes.

To celebrate a milestone in a teen or tween’s life, it’s a privilege for GT Studios to be a part of this unique experience – such as this ballet dancer’s graduation to pointe shoes.

Over the years we have refined our skills and now we provide a very specific service for a small niche group.   That epiphany came after a Family Photo Experience – it was an amazing day – a beautiful Mum, terrific Dad, the cutest little boy and the sweetest little girl. We offered to give the little girl a Princess Photo Experience after her Family Session.

Dad and little brother went to the playground and it was then that the magic truly began for us. This little girl had been amazing during her family session but she was extraordinary as we totally dedicated our skill and attention to her. We saw a depth in her eyes, an understanding in her expression and a gratefulness in her heart.

A depth in her eyes - an understanding in her expression - and a gratefulness in her heart.

A depth in her eyes – an understanding in her expression – and a gratefulness in her heart.

After the family left we were eager to review the images – hoping that the emotion we felt was not just the electricity in the room but it would translate through to the images and then on to the final prints. We were not disappointed. As we sat together, reviewing each image we were brought to tears – we had found our calling. We both knew at that moment that we were meant to do what we had done that afternoon!

Raw emotion shows through in this teen photo experience at GT Studios,

Raw emotion shows through in this teen photo experience at GT Studios,

Over the last few years we have refined our craft and now offer many different photo experiences – we offer a pre-session consultation so that we can ensure each girl has a unique photo experience designed around her own personality. Yes – we do have a signature style and so many of our clients fit in to that category which we love but our goal is to find the true essence in the eyes of our girls as we photograph them so that moment can be cherished forever.

Are we still brought to tears when we review our images at the end of a photo session? Oh yes – if we don’t feel a raw emotion at the end of the day then we are not doing our job. Every photo experience should be one full of emotion – we laugh, we have fun, we get the best out of our girls, we build them up, we encourage them, we build their self-confidence and self-esteem. They go home exhausted and we are exhausted but we can guarantee that they will have had a day that they will talk about for weeks and remember for years to come!

We try to surround them with a world of positivity for the time they are with us – take them away from the stress of their studies, peers, work – whatever it might be that causes them discomfort.

We take time to get to know our teens and tweens making sure they are relaxed and comfortable on the day of their photo shoot. If this means learning about how they make Slime then teach me!

We take time to get to know our teens and tweens making sure they are relaxed and comfortable on the day of their photo shoot. If this means learning about how they make Slime then teach me!

Within two weeks we will review the images and then select the top 100 to present at a review and select session. This time it is our girl and her family’s time to feel the raw emotion that comes from seeing images of a girl who became transformed in a way they didn’t think possible. As they sit in the darkened theatre and watch the slide show the room is filled with gasps of oohs and aahhs – and some laughs too – we keep it real! By this stage we have had at least two face to face meetings and several more phone, emails, PM’s or DM’s so we know what sort of image to present! We feel that we begin as strangers but over the journey we become more like friends. It’s important to build a trust with your photographer. If it’s done properly – this should be someone you come back to for all those important milestones in life!

Has this tween had a sugar overdose at her GT Studios photo experience? No - but she's having a great time! We could see her confidence & self esteem grow as the day went on.

The Face of April

As I mentioned last month, we will be giving away a free photo experience every month for the Face of the Month Project. You can see some of the images from these photo experiences on our Instagram page and Facebook page.

Our Face of April had a musical theme and we had lots of applications. Some vocalists, flautists, keyboard/pianists, guitarists and a ukulele player but not everyone fulfilled the brief. I really struggled to choose a winner but Nyree impressed me with her application.

Day Dream Believer - The Face of April - Nyree

Day Dream Believer – The Face of April – Nyree

Nyree told me in her application that her two joys in life were her piano and being in front of a camera! She has been playing piano for less than a year but told me she was absolutely in love! She loves to listen to pop music but enjoys playing soft meaningful music. Of course, we didn’t expect Nyree to transport a piano or even a keyboard from her house to our studio – luckily we had one we could use for the photo experience and as you might have noticed from one of the sets of images on Instagram we even took it to the forest!

Sunshine on my Shoulder - Nyree - Face of April

Sunshine on my Shoulder – Nyree – Face of April

After some initial discussion about the photo experience we discovered that Nyree was also passionate about dance and it has been a part of her life for about 8 years – at 14 this means she has been doing it for more than half her life. She does ballet, jazz, and hip hop and is very excited to be starting on pointe next year – another big milestone in the life of a ballerina. We were delighted to discover Nyree danced so we incorporated dance in to the photo experience and we will hopefully showcase some of Nyree’s dance images next week on Instagram.

In to the Woods - Nyree - Face of April

In to the Woods – Nyree – Face of April

Nyree admits to being a very ambitious person and would like to be a model or marine biologist in the future. She understands that both these careers require a lot of hard work but is prepared to put in the time and effort. She would also like to travel to France as she loves all things chic and is a big lover of fashion.

Where words fail music speaks - I would like to think we could say that about our photography too!

The Face of the Month for May has been decided and I am very excited to announce that our winner is Courtney – her application was everything I was looking for! We are really looking forward to meeting her next week and sharing some images with you next month. Our theme for May is Quirky but Cool so we are keen to see how Courtney, Graham and I will work together to achieve this interesting Geeky look – this promises to be a fun photo experience!!!

Model Portfolio

One of the services that we provide is a Model Portfolio Photo Session. We have recently had the pleasure of adding to Jemma’s model portfolio. As an emerging talent she had an impressive portfolio already but we were delighted to be able to add our style to her collection.

Elegance is when the inside is as beautiful as the outside - Jemma at her portfolio Session

Elegance is when the inside is as beautiful as the outside – Jemma at her portfolio Session

Jemma was a dream to work with – vivacious, bubbly and bright – she easily transformed her look from one outfit to the next and took direction with ease. We feel sure Jemma will be a sought after model on the catwalk and at fashion shoots and we look forward to another opportunity to work with her.

Be Someones Sunshine Today - Jemmas portfolio session

Be Someones Sunshine Today – Jemmas portfolio session

Jemma’s hobbies are netball, dance, fashion and drawing. When she leaves school she would love to become a fashion designer and still do modelling as well! She hopes to complete her certificate ll and lll in fashion design during her schooling years of 11 and 12. Jemma started modelling last year when she came runner up in the AZALEA Models Rural Model Search and from then has absolutely loved being a model, having the opportunity to do several cat walks/runways and editorial photo shoots already.  Having worked for a hair and beauty salon and a fashion clothing store Jemma is always aware of the latest trends.

Sweet as Sugar - Jemma completely transformed at her Portfolio Session

Sweet as Sugar – Jemma completely transformed at her Portfolio Session

Like most models travelling to Paris is on the bucket list! However – for Jemma – it’s because she wants to climb the Eiffel Tower! Life is not all about modelling for Jemma though – she has a strong desire to travel to Cambodia or Indonesia too as she would like to help build homes or schools for people who need them. Family is also important to Jemma and one of her favourite holidays was a trip to Airlie Beach in Queensland because she traveled with a big group of family friends. She also loves time on the river with her family wake boarding and knee boarding.

You can see more images of Jemma on our Instagram account at @gtstudiosphotography

  • The Face of March

As I mentioned last month, we will be giving away a free photo experience every month for the Face of the Month Project. Make sure you follow our Instagram account for the next call and what we are looking for.

Jordan The Face of March

Face of the Month Jordan

Our Face of March had been following GT Studios for a while and had made enquiries about photo experiences too. When we put out the call for this month we really only had one requirement. We wanted a ballet dancer who was on pointe!  We would like to introduce you to Jordan @jordan.hissey She answered the call almost instantly and we were very happy at the end of the call to announce that Jordan had got herself that photo experience she was hoping for!

Jordan - The Face of March

Jordan – Dancing in the Rain

After accepting the role of Face of March Jordan admitted that she was quite nervous as she had not done any modelling – she didn’t need to be nervous – she did an amazing job and we are really happy with the images that we have.

Autumn - The Face of March

Autumn in the Forest – Jordan The Face of March

Jordan may not have had any modelling experience but she was more than qualified for our needs this month – she has been dancing since she was three and went on to pointe shoes this year!

Jordan the Face of March

The Face of the Month for March – Jordan with her Pointe Shoes in Hand

Jordan would like to look at modelling or nursing as a career in the future and I think she has qualities that would suit both of these occupations. One day Jordan hopes to travel to Italy – who knows maybe a modelling career would take her to Fashion Week in Milan – known as the Fashion capital of the world!!!

The Face of the Month for April – who will it be? The winner will be announced on Monday the 19th of March

  • Printed and Digital Publications

We can now confirm that Graham has been published in the new Australian Kids Fashion Magazine “Madison Fashion Magazine” @madisonfashionmagazine We are very happy to say that we have been published in all three issues so far. This magazine publishes photographers and models from all over the world so we are so grateful to the team at Madison Fashion Magazine for choosing us!

  • Fine Art Collaboration

This year sees us embarking on several Fine Art Projects. Not only has Mikayla been published in Madison Fashion Magazine this year but her modelling skills have been put to great use by taking part in two of our Fine Art Projects that we are working on.
Emotions Fine Art Project Mikayla

Emotions Fine Art Project Mikayla

The first project is looking at the emotions of teenagers – we wanted this to be teenager driven – we ask them to provide their own choice of outfit for three set emotions and then use their expression and body language to illustrate the emotion we have asked for. This has proved to be challenging and thought provoking for all involved but also incredibly moving and powerful.
The Goddess Within Fine Art Project Mikayla

The second project that Mikayla has been involved in has been the Goddess Within – this involves lots of tulle – making a dress on set and lots of flowers!

  • 500th Follower

Way back on the 15th of December last year I woke up to 499 followers on Instagram – that was a big deal for me – I mentioned it on my post that day that I was hoping I didn’t lose any followers and a young teenager DM’d me to say she had just given us our 500th follower!

I was so impressed that I spoke to Graham (the other half of GT Studios) and we decided to offer her a photo experience. We are so glad that our two worlds have come together. We had an amazing day with her and her Mum – we took lots of photos and you will start to see some of them appear on our Instagram and Facebook page over the next few weeks. It was so hard to choose just a few!

Unlike some of our other clients, Maddy has not done any modelling and she is not a dancer but that did not matter at all – she came with enthusiasm and passion for life – Thank you so much Maddy – for being our 500th follower and also for being the lovely person that you are! As this goes live we are now up to 804 followers – a big thank you to all of you – for you likes, comments and for your continued support!

Pure Essence – A Fine Art Photo Exhibition

Happy New Year everyone! A great start to 2018 for GT Studios – we have been invited by Jin from By Blackbird on King William Road at Goodwood to exhibit some of our work. We are so excited to be given this opportunity.

We observed this short eared owl for about an hour whilst it caught rodents and fed its chicks. Olympic Peninsula, Washington State, USA

The hardest part for us was deciding on a theme – when we are not photographing children we have quite an eclectic collection – we both have a very different way of looking at the same thing and this is actually a really good thing! At first we thought we would present “The Owl and the Pussycat” – Graham took some awesome images of an owl when we were in America and we both have a huge collection of cats both large and small from all over the world. On reflection we decided that this was perhaps not appealing enough to a wider audience.

We then gave our light painting and abstract work some consideration – however, this too is fairly restrictive in its appeal!

We eventually decided that we both took images of flowers and flowers featured in a lot of photo experiences with our clients too. Perhaps we should exhibit our flowers…..

For flowers and girls – it’s the little details that matter

Most of our photography these days revolves around children – but we still find ourselves photographing flowers. Sometimes it is in conjunction with a photo experience; sometimes it is when we are enjoying some down-time in some of the beautiful gardens we visit both locally and when on holiday.

Sweet Sunshine

Sweet Sunshine

When we put this collection together for the exhibition we realised that Pure Essence was fitting for both our Flower Collection on display and for sale as well as our Photo Experiences that we offer.

Blue Agapanthus, Adelaide Botanic Gardens, South Australia

In philosophy, essence is the property or set of properties that make an entity or substance what it fundamentally is, and which it has by necessity, and without which it loses its identity – this is what we try to capture when you look into our lens.

Every child is a different kind of flower and all together make this world a beautiful garden.

We photograph flowers so their essence doesn’t fade – we create photographic art capturing the essence of children so the memories last forever.

We would love to see you at the official opening of the exhibition on Saturday 6th of January 2pm -5pm

See all the details in the invitation above.

Making Christmas Gift Giving Easy For You!

It’s that time of year when we start to make our Christmas lists. Even Santa is making a list and checking it twice! Today’s blog is about helping you with your list making and making Christmas Gift Giving easy for you!

Have you been naughty or nice?

Christmas Photo Experience

Gifts, greetings cards, ingredients for baking – I can think of many lists that I could be writing! Are you a list maker? Are you the person who has to decide who has been naughty and who has been nice?

Making a list…..

Gifts, greetings cards, ingredients for baking – I can think of many lists that I could be writing!

I am not very good at those sorts of lists – I think everyone should have a lovely Christmas. I try to please everyone and usually end up feeling exhausted by the end of it and not really happy with what I have done. So, this year I am going to try really hard to be super organised – not take on too much responsibility and enjoy every moment with Family and Friends.

Surprise!

It's just what I wanted! Children and adults alike will love a framed portrait for Christmas

Dance the Day Away

Black & White or Colour

Do you have a preference for Black & White or Colour photography?

This is a question we ask when we are helping our clients custom design their photo experience. The answer will help decide the colour of clothes, the setting and even the style of photography.

It also depends on where the artwork is destined to hang – what the decor of the room is, what size it will be and whether it will be presented in a frame or as an acrylic or other presentation. However, sometimes it just comes down to personal taste and it is often nice to see the same image in both black & white and colour.

The image featured on the blog today was published in the “Gallery of Refined Art” Children’s Photography Wing this week. We chose to submit it in black and white.

It’s Winter – What if it Rains?

As we approach the middle of June we are still being greeted with the most glorious of sunny, blue sky days – I can hardly believe it is Winter. The reality  is  – we can’t ever be sure of the weather when we book a photo experience, no matter how much planning goes in to the session the one thing we can not guarantee is the weather on the day.

Many people are put off by Winter but in fact some of the most beautiful photo opportunities come at this time of year. At the moment there are still the end of Autumn scenes to be had so if you get in quick you may just get that photo surrounded by golden toned crunchy leaves. If you leave it for a few weeks you can be all rugged up in winter woollies – looking as snug as a bug! If you take a look at some of the other posts you will see I have a passion for parasols – umbrellas look just as good – if you get caught in a shower it doesn’t really mater!

Wow! Christmas in July!

Wow! Christmas in July!

The alternative to an outdoor photo experience in Winter is to book your session in one of our studio opportunities. We have two studio set ups that give quite different outcomes. Depending on your dream for your wall art and imagination we can set the studio accordingly. Christmas in July is always a popular option!

Puurrfect place to paws for a pat!

As some of our regular readers have noticed we have strayed away from our usual client base over the last few weeks. We have had images of trains and flowers, cupcakes and Christmas decorations and now an assortment of cats!

Graham and I have spent the Christmas break doing quite a bit of editing and also some further education and training. We feel it is always important to improve our knowledge and skills so that we can continue to give our clients the very best product that we can.

With all this work I thought it was only fair that we had an evening off to relax. I discovered this great little spot that combines coffee, cake and cats – I was pretty keen to give it a go. We spent a very relaxing 90 minutes drinking iced coffee, eating Sizzling Brownies and playing with 9 adorable cats at Hashtag Meow Cat Cafe.

Of course, I took my camera, so while Graham played, I took photos.  I hear they have had a new cat arrive since we were there last week (Bruce) so I guess I will have to find time to make another booking and hang out with 10 cats for a while – a great way to de-stress after a busy day!

Contact Graham or Karen if you would like to have a free in house consultation regarding a photo experience with you and your furry family members.

A Photographers Holiday!

Graham and I had a chance for a quick getaway late last year, of course, we took our cameras with us! We thought it was time we blogged some of our photos.

We spent a weekend in Quorn – a delightful old town in a valley of the Flinders Ranges. It was first surveyed in 1878 and the railway line from Port Augusta to Quorn opened in 1879. The town has kept its Heritage atmosphere and appeal helped by the fact that it is the home of the Pichi Richi Railway.

There was a photo opportunity at every corner. So, we took every opportunity. We have images of the trains, tracks, workshops, hotels, wildflowers, landscapes, volunteers, the locals, the wildlife, and the ruins. There was so much to see and do – I would highly recommend a stay there.

We stayed at the Flinders Ranges Motel – The Mill. We took a ride on the Pichi Richi Explorer – the volunteers were fantastic. We also did a tour of the Pichi Richi Rail yard and Workshop. It was fascinating to hear about the history of rail and see these great machines close up and so lovingly worked on. We had delicious breakfasts at the Quandong Cafe, lunches at Emily’s Bistro were a delight with such friendly staff and Dinner at 2 of the hotels.

We were there in October – it was hot, I got really sunburnt but that is another story, with other images on another blog post!!

Is that for me?

I love this photo of Miss T! I think she can say a lot with her eyes. In fact most people can speak with their eyes if they want to. To me, this photo is a question – “Is that for me?” Some others might interpret it differently, that is the beauty of photography.
